Cross the Charles Bridge and continue into courtyards, squares and streets where royal ambitions met ordinary lives. This layered city rewards curiosity far more than a checklist of monuments.
Start with “The Old Town: from the Powder Tower to the Astronomical Clock”. You start where the kings once lived and finish in front of Prague's most famous clock, which sets its figures in motion every hour. Along the way you'll find out why the Powder Tower was never finished, where foreign merchants paid their dues and what was bought and sold in a square with Romanesque houses buried beneath your feet.
Then there’s “Prague Castle: Kings, Astronomers and Prisoners”. Prague Castle has been ruling from the hilltop for a thousand years, and this walk tells you what went on inside its walls. You start in front of the palace where, according to the Prague tourist office, Tycho Brahe went to his last banquet; you cross the courtyards of the presidents and of Rudolf the Second, whose books nearly all ended up in Stockholm; you find out why St Vitus took almost six centuries and how the Thirty Years' War began without a single death.
For another side of the city, try “Upper Hradčany: from Strahov to Castle Square”. Above the Castle there's another Prague, a quieter one. You start at Strahov Monastery, where a saint who came from the north in the middle of a war lies at rest, and you walk down through a neighbourhood that carries fire in its name.
Keep exploring with “Josefov, Prague's Jewish Quarter: the Golem, Memory and Kafka”. Josefov was a city within the city, and it very nearly vanished. This walk begins at the statue of Rabbi Loew, the man legend credited with a giant made of clay two hundred years after his death, and ends with Kafka riding on the shoulders of an empty suit.
Choose by neighbourhood or by the stories that interest you: each route shows its distance, stops and approximate duration before you set off. The audio is written for walking, with a clear distinction between documented events and local legend. Download it in the app, put on your headphones and pause whenever something catches your eye. English and Spanish are included.
Ten stories along the old coronation route: the building that replaced the royal palace and where the republic was signed into being, a tower left half-finished, the chalice taken down from Týn by night, twenty-seven crosses in the pavement and a clock that very nearly ended up as scrap.

Our Prague guide has suggestions for one, two and three days. Start with one area rather than trying to fit every walk into a day; leave room for travel between neighbourhoods and any indoor visits.
Gradient. The Old Town and Josefov are comparatively flat. Malá Strana and the climb to the Castle are more demanding and may include stairs. Underfoot. Cobbles and uneven paving need care in rain or ice. Small wheels struggle.
“The Old Town: from the Powder Tower to the Astronomical Clock” is the free route: 10 stops over 0.9 km, with an approximate duration of 40 minutes. You can see its map and stops on the route page.
Spring and early autumn suit longer walks without the strongest heat. In May, Prague Spring brings a classical music atmosphere. December’s Christmas markets attract crowds to the centre.
