The Alhambra from Outside: Hill, Woods and Gates
You don't need a ticket to start understanding the Alhambra.
Thirteen stops downhill across the hill once called Valparaíso: the abbey born of some lead tablets, a cross for every trade, the Friday-night Way of the Cross, the caves the travellers saw, the winter of 1963, the old road out towards Guadix, the postcard prince and the house of the suspect's friend.

You start at the top, where an archbishop built an abbey on some lead sheets that half of Granada believed in and that we now know were fakes. You walk down among crosses paid for by silk weavers, porters and soldiers, along the path the brotherhood climbed every Friday night. On the Camino del Sacromonte you'll meet an abbot who collected Roman inscriptions, the spring across the valley where Ganivet gathered his friends, the Morisco who defended the zambras before the president of the royal court, the caves a French traveller described and the rain that emptied the hill in 1963. At the foot of the Cuesta del Chapiz you'll hear how the road to Guadix once began here; and you finish in Chorrojumo's little square and at the house of two Moriscos who lost everything, where the story of the lead tablets comes full circle.

Walking directions are based on mapped pedestrian routes. Check local access and signs; the route is not an accessibility guarantee. Times are approximate.
Check the slope before joining two dots on the map. Good shoes, breaks and one neighbourhood at a time keep Granada’s hills from taking over the whole trip.

There's more to the Albaicín than the viewpoint.

The Carrera del Darro is narrow, beautiful and full of stories told in a low voice.
