The Alhambra from Outside: Hill, Woods and Gates
You don't need a ticket to start understanding the Alhambra.
Twelve legends and secrets on Granada's loveliest street: the song that threatens to carry off Plaza Nueva, a professor born to an enslaved mother, the death of a saint, gold in the river, a painted sword, a thousand-year-old bath, a hospital for the mentally ill, the bricked-up balcony and the day a gunpowder workshop blew up.

The Carrera del Darro is narrow, beautiful and full of stories told in a low voice. You start where the river comes out from under the city, with a song that has spent centuries warning that one day it will carry off Plaza Nueva. You look for the lost tomb of Juan Latino, the son of an enslaved woman who became a professor; you see the house where John of God died and the doorway where, they say, he painted a sword. Between bridges you hear about the Darro's gold fever, the bridge that closed off the city, the Bath of the Walnut Tree and the hospital a sultan founded for the sick poor. You reach the bricked-up balcony of the Casa de Castril and its three explanations, the day in 1590 when a gunpowder workshop blew up, and the Paseo de los Tristes, where bulls once ran over the river. Every legend comes with what's known of its origin.

Check the slope before joining two dots on the map. Good shoes, breaks and one neighbourhood at a time keep Granada’s hills from taking over the whole trip.
