The Alhambra from Outside: Hill, Woods and Gates
You don't need a ticket to start understanding the Alhambra.
Twelve stops through the lower town: Mariana Pineda, Lorca's café circle, a head in a cage, the river under the street, the merchants' inn, a banned song, books on the fire, a parchment hidden in a tower, and the Catholic Monarchs.

Central Granada looks like a postcard, and it's full of clues. You start at the statue of Mariana Pineda, who was never imprisoned in that square, and at the corner where a group of friends, Lorca among them, invented a poet. Where the buses go by today there was once a gate with cages, and under the straightest street runs a river. You step, in your imagination, into the Nasrid merchants' inn, hear the ballad that, according to a novelist, was banned for being too sad, look for a gate that's no longer there and for the bonfire of books that nobody can place. You finish among the Cathedral, the Alcaicería, the school of Yusuf I and the Royal Chapel, where the most powerful monarchs of their day lie in a chapel their grandson thought fit for a merchant.

Walking directions are based on mapped pedestrian routes. Check local access and signs; the route is not an accessibility guarantee. Times are approximate.
Check the slope before joining two dots on the map. Good shoes, breaks and one neighbourhood at a time keep Granada’s hills from taking over the whole trip.
