Convents and Legends of the Northern Old Town
Behind the Setas, a Seville of convents and tenement houses begins.
Northern Seville as a living neighbourhood: a church burnt "just because", the cell of a saintly prince, a wall built by two empires, the Master who, so the story went, came in through the Macarena gate, a hospital that was never finished, the tomb opened in the small hours in 2022, the church where the neighbourhood stood up for itself with buckets and from its balconies, a square born of a demolition, and two uprisings over bread.

You start in front of San Julián, which burnt down in 1932, and follow the Almohad wall from the Puerta de Córdoba, where Seville venerated the cell of St Hermenegild, to the Macarena arch: the Master who, according to a chronicler writing in 1839, came in through this gate in 1358, the oath Charles V swore between the two gates, and the explanations of the name. Opposite stands the Hospital de las Cinco Llagas, the Hospital of the Five Wounds; inside, the basilica from which Queipo de Llano's tomb was removed in 2022. Next door, San Gil, home of the Esperanza for almost three centuries: the women who, in 1929, greeted an imposed head of the brotherhood with buckets of lard and indigo, and the balconies from which, in 1936, neighbours spotted the arsonists, who left without touching the store where the processional floats were kept. Then comes the Pumarejo, the Algaba palace turned theatre and cinema, and the Plaza de la Feria, where a loaf at seven reales sparked the revolt of 1652. You finish at the market that gives the street its name.

The centre offers few serious hills, but sunshine sets the pace. Alternate squares, lanes and a long break: Seville rewards a day with room to breathe.

Before it became the neighbourhood's living room, the Alameda was a lagoon, and then a promenade that smelt of its ditches.

Santa Cruz looks untouched, but it tells a different story.
