The Cathedral, the Giralda and the Alcázar
You begin with a famous line that nobody wrote into the minutes, then follow the chains round the Cathedral steps, where people bought and sold even inside the church.
From the Anunciación to Calle Santiago, the part of the centre that tourism walks straight past: Bécquer's homecoming, the Setas on top of a convent, an inscription with two translations, the walled-up women who weren't, Machado's patio, María Coronel in three versions, the organ that played by itself, a tenement courtyard where four thousand people were said to live, and a palace that was a prison of the Inquisition before it was a convent.

Behind the Setas, a Seville of convents and tenement houses begins. You start where Bécquer rests and find out why it took him forty-three years to come home. Under the Setas there was a convent, a market and a car park before the Roman city turned up. At San Juan de la Palma you hear about an inscription that every translator read his own way, and you meet the emparedadas, who weren't actually walled up. You pass the house where Machado was born, follow the legend of María Coronel as it changes from century to century, hear about the organ Bécquer invented, pass the doorway of a church that came from another church and the door of a tenement courtyard with a giant reputation, and finish in front of a palace that was a prison of the Inquisition before it became a convent.

The centre offers few serious hills, but sunshine sets the pace. Alternate squares, lanes and a long break: Seville rewards a day with room to breathe.

The centre of Seville is full of stories that everyone repeats; this walk puts them to the test without spoiling the fun.

Before it became the neighbourhood's living room, the Alameda was a lagoon, and then a promenade that smelt of its ditches.
