Central Seville: Legends and Truths
The centre of Seville is full of stories that everyone repeats; this walk puts them to the test without spoiling the fun.
The Seville essentials with their best stories: the famous line about "madmen" that nobody signed, merchants thrown out of the Cathedral, a daredevil on a beam high up the Giralda, the morning of the earthquake, King Pedro's stone seat and an archive where eleven families once lived. It ends at the Torre del Oro.

You begin with a famous line that nobody wrote into the minutes, then follow the chains round the Cathedral steps, where people bought and sold even inside the church. Beneath the Giralda, a minstrel who, according to a chronicle, invites the king to dinner at the top, and a captain who, so the story went, balanced on a beam. Then the Mass cut short by the earthquake of 1755, the stone seat of a judging king, a royal funeral that ended halfway, the merchants' building turned into the Archive of the Indies, and the tower Seville very nearly knocked down. All of it from the street.

The centre offers few serious hills, but sunshine sets the pace. Alternate squares, lanes and a long break: Seville rewards a day with room to breathe.

Seville's quay stood right here by the river.

You start at San Telmo, a school for orphan pilots with a doorway that drove the critics to distraction.
