The Alhambra from Outside: Hill, Woods and Gates
You don't need a ticket to start understanding the Alhambra.
Twelve stops in ten blocks: the Great Captain's wandering tomb, John of God's question carved in stone, a square born of a demolition, a former slave who became a professor, Lorca the student, the house and the building of August 1936, and the papers that came back from New York.

West of the Cathedral there's a student quarter. You start in front of a church that calls the Great Captain the terror of the French, just before the French turned it into a granary, and you follow the journey of his bones. You read the question John of God used to shout in the street, carved in stone, and you cross a square left behind by a demolished church. In the Plaza de la Universidad you find out what the University was founded for, who the slave was who went on to teach Latin there, and how a student called Federico finished his law degree with a little help. Then comes August 1936: the building that no longer exists and the house of the poet friend where Lorca hid for seven days. You finish where his papers are kept today, papers that left in two suitcases and came back.

Walking directions are based on mapped pedestrian routes. Check local access and signs; the route is not an accessibility guarantee. Times are approximate.
Check the slope before joining two dots on the map. Good shoes, breaks and one neighbourhood at a time keep Granada’s hills from taking over the whole trip.

The Carrera del Darro is narrow, beautiful and full of stories told in a low voice.

The Realejo is a living neighbourhood that keeps few stones and a great many stories.
