The Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and the Memorial
You finish at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, and in an ordinary car park that Berlin deliberately left without a monument.
When was each legend born, and what fact lies inside it?
5 walks with different starting points and stories. Compare their maps, stops and duration, then choose where to begin.
Explore these walks
Berlin has myths that are repeated until they seem part of the landscape. These walks ask when each account began and how it relates to events. The theme brings legends and popular explanations together with attention to their versions, so you can enjoy a story while still considering how it reached us.
In “Alexanderplatz and the TV Tower”: At St Mary's Church, the Marienkirche, a stone cross is linked to a murder in 1325, and a Dance of Death runs round the tower hall; in that same church Martin Luther King preached, after crossing the Wall, so the story goes, without a passport.
In “Bebelplatz and Gendarmenmarkt”: On the Gendarmenmarkt: the legend of Sekt, the Huguenots' church, E.
In “The Wall on Bernauer Straße”: You finish with the women who jumped from their windows, Conrad Schumann's leap, and the rumour of a second death that never happened.
Choose from 5 independent walks in Berlin. Open the one that interests you to see its map, stops and approximate duration before deciding. You don't need to do them all or follow this selection's order; each walk has its own starting and finishing points.

At the end you cross the Oberbaum Bridge, with its tree trunk against smugglers and its Calatrava span, and finish on the Kreuzberg bank, where the border was the water.
Berlin alternates broad avenues, courtyards and neighbourhoods with lives of their own. Walk each area slowly and use transport between them: several good walks make more sense than one marathon.
