Berlin's Jewish Quarter: from Rosenstraße to the New Synagogue
You start in Rosenstraße, where in the winter of 1943 families, mostly women, stood in the street and asked for their husbands and children back.
The heart of East Berlin, with its legends put to the test: Marx and Engels facing the other way, a frieze rebuilt from neighbours' photographs, an evicted sea god, a stone cross with three legends, Martin Luther King, who, the story goes, crossed without a passport, the TV Tower's cross of light, and the square where hundreds of thousands of people threw the windows open in 1989.

You start in front of Marx and Engels, who no longer face the way people say they do, and a Red Town Hall that isn't red because it's communist, and whose chronicle in stone was rebuilt from photographs lent by ordinary Berliners. Neptune came here after being evicted from the palace square. At St Mary's Church, the Marienkirche, a stone cross is linked to a murder in 1325, and a Dance of Death runs round the tower hall; in that same church Martin Luther King preached, after crossing the Wall, so the story goes, without a passport. The TV Tower, the symbol of an atheist state, drew a cross in the sunlight that the West called the Pope's revenge, and above its sphere the Stasi photographed number plates. You finish by the World Clock and the building with the mosaic frieze, where on 4 November 1989 a crowd spoke freely, five days before the Wall fell.

Berlin alternates broad avenues, courtyards and neighbourhoods with lives of their own. Walk each area slowly and use transport between them: several good walks make more sense than one marathon.

You start at the Neue Wache, in front of the mother sculpted by Käthe Kollwitz.

You start at the opera house an impatient king opened before it was finished, and at the cathedral where Bernhard Lichtenberg prayed for the persecuted until he was reported.
