Seafaring and Gitano Triana
On Calle Pureza, once called Calle Larga, a brotherhood of sailors took sixty years to pay for its chapel and then lost it for seventy-two.
Triana beyond the postcard: the potter saints and a pitcher fraud, the castle where the Inquisition set up and which ended up under a market, the night the neighbourhood defended its bridge, the chain that never existed, the Devil's arm across the river, the master of tiles who paid his dues in hens, and two legends hidden in Santa Ana.

You start among tiled façades, where the potters had saints of their own and ordinances with a seal. You go down the alley named after the Inquisition to the castle where the tribunal set up in 1481, and which floods and the centuries turned into a market. In the Altozano, the small hours of 1812 when the locals defended the bridge, and the day the old bridge of boats said goodbye to its boatman. Along Calle Betis, the chain of 1248 that the chroniclers already doubted, and the tale of a Don Juan who lit his cigar from the other bank. You finish at Santa Ana: on its street lived the great master of tiles, Niculoso Pisano, whose houses paid a hospital for the blind money and two pairs of hens every year; on its walls, a king who lost an eye; and inside, a tiled tomb that someone pointed out twice.

The centre offers few serious hills, but sunshine sets the pace. Alternate squares, lanes and a long break: Seville rewards a day with room to breathe.

Seville's quay stood right here by the river.

The centre of Seville is full of stories that everyone repeats; this walk puts them to the test without spoiling the fun.
