The Cathedral, the Giralda and the Alcázar
You begin with a famous line that nobody wrote into the minutes, then follow the chains round the Cathedral steps, where people bought and sold even inside the church.
From tobacco to the 1929 stage set: a doorway called a monster, a cigar-makers' revolt, tombs under a moat, a Cid that may be the original and the architect who never got to enjoy his plaza.

You start at San Telmo, a school for orphan pilots with a doorway that drove the critics to distraction. You pass a hotel built on top of a garden and reach the Tobacco Factory: the air of a palace, a prison of its own and thousands of women who were nothing like the Carmen of the novel, and who in 1842 said enough is enough. Under its moat, Roman tombs. At the old entrance to the Exhibition you'll find a Cid by a New York sculptor, the pavilion with which Portugal chose Seville, and Seville's own casino-theatre, which not every specialist thinks looks Sevillian. At the Glorieta de Bécquer you'll find out who paid for the monument, and you finish in the Plaza de España with its architect and with the cinema, which took it for Arabia and for another planet.

The centre offers few serious hills, but sunshine sets the pace. Alternate squares, lanes and a long break: Seville rewards a day with room to breathe.

Seville's quay stood right here by the river.

The centre of Seville is full of stories that everyone repeats; this walk puts them to the test without spoiling the fun.
