London

London's neighbourhoods changed with the people who arrived to live and work in them. This theme brings trades, refugees and everyday life together to follow those transformations on foot. The walks approach history at the scale of a street, with attention to residents and the activities that gave each area a different identity.

In “Bankside and Southwark”: Watermen, breweries and a church bought by its neighbours bring Bankside's life into view beyond its theatres.

In “Soho”: You start in Soho Square, with the statue of a king who spent sixty years in a garden on the outskirts, and the church of the French refugees who filled the neighbourhood.

In “Whitechapel, 1888”: The story of Jack the Ripper told through the five women and their neighbourhood: a pair of pawned boots, an invented shipwreck, a chalked message wiped away before dawn, a letter from Wandsworth, the lodging houses, the survey of poverty, and the panic that found a culprit before the police did.

London, before you go

London makes more sense an area at a time than as one vast walk. Neighbourhoods change pace within a few streets; the sky may change while you find the next one.
