Westminster: Parliament, the Abbey and Big Ben
You start on Westminster Bridge, where a poet saw a city without its smoke and whose sonnet carries a different date, then carry on beneath Big Ben, which is really a bell with a crack in it.
The neighbourhood named after a hunting cry: Huguenots fleeing Louis XIV, Mozart tested for a fee, Marx described by a spy, the water pump that showed how cholera spreads, the fashionable street that grew up beside a plague pesthouse, Canaletto at a cabinet-maker's, and the angel everyone calls Eros.

You start in Soho Square, with the statue of a king who spent sixty years in a garden on the outskirts, and the church of the French refugees who filled the neighbourhood. In Frith Street, a nine-year-old played for anyone who bought a ticket: Mozart. In Dean Street, Marx lived in two rooms that a Prussian spy described in every detail. In Berwick Street, a market nobody founded, which won by wearing everyone down. In Broadwick Street, Dr Snow counted the dead house by house until he pointed to a water pump, and his best proof was a widow who lived far away and had that water brought to her because she preferred it. Carnaby Street was laid out against the wall of a plague pesthouse, and round the corner Canaletto invited the public, by advertisement, to come and see his painting. You finish in Golden Square, at Nash's wall and beneath the angel of Piccadilly Circus.

London makes more sense an area at a time than as one vast walk. Neighbourhoods change pace within a few streets; the sky may change while you find the next one.

You start on Westminster Bridge, where a poet saw a city without its smoke and whose sonnet carries a different date, then carry on beneath Big Ben, which is really a bell with a crack in it.

You start in Seven Dials, the star of seven streets whose column vanished in 1773, and not for the reason you'll hear, in the old neighbourhood of gallows ballads; on Rose Street, a poet was beaten up over a poem he hadn't written.

You start by the lake where Charles II kept Russian pelicans and Balearic cranes, and pass the back of Downing Street, named after a diplomat who changed sides and sold out his old friends.
