The Medici in San Lorenzo and San Marco: audio walk in Florence
From the Medici neighbourhood to the square of their Grand Duke: a market from the years when Florence was a capital, a façade that was never built, a palace too beautiful to be allowed, the lightning that heralded Lorenzo's death, the garden where Michelangelo learnt his craft, the storming of San Marco and the first little girl taken in at the Innocenti.

What this walk is about
You start at the Mercato Centrale, the great iron-and-glass market that Florence began building in the few years when it was the capital of Italy, and walk on to the bare façade of San Lorenzo, the one Michelangelo never clad in marble. Round the corner stands the palace Cosimo wanted kept plain so as not to stir up envy. In Via de' Martelli you picture the lantern of the cathedral dome, hidden behind the houses, and the night of the lightning in 1492, when Florence looked up at it in fear, three days before Lorenzo died. Then you follow the old Via Larga to the confiscated palace. At San Marco come the garden where a boy kept the keys to the statues, the convent the city stormed to seize Savonarola, and the bell that was banished like a person. You finish at the Santissima Annunziata with the Grand Duke and his bees, the bride from Browning's poem, and the first little girl taken in at the Innocenti.
