Legends of Florence
Florence tells a great many stories, and here you find out how long it's been telling them.
The cathedral square, face to face: a prank out of a novella of the time, a contest with a catch, a dome nobody knew how to close, a lightning bolt that brought down the golden ball, and a murder in the middle of Mass.

You start where Dante was baptised and walk round the Baptistery: the carpenter who, according to a novella of the time, was talked into believing he was another man; the elm that, tradition says, flowered in January; and the 1401 contest that every contender told his own way. Then the confraternity that has been carrying the sick for eight centuries, and its hooded men in black; a façade tried out at full size in front of the public; Brunelleschi's egg; the stone where tradition sits Dante; and the marble disc that, they say, marks where the ball from the lantern fell. You finish beside the cathedral, where the Pazzi conspiracy attacked the Medici in the middle of Mass. Every legend is told as a legend, and you can hear it all from the square.

Florence fits into short walks that grow longer as you keep looking. The centre is compact; crossing the Arno changes the perspective without changing the city.

Florence tells a great many stories, and here you find out how long it's been telling them.

Within a hundred metres of narrow streets lived the Portinari, the Donati, the Cerchi and the Alighieri.

You start at the Mercato Centrale, the great iron-and-glass market that Florence began building in the few years when it was the capital of Italy, and walk on to the bare façade of San Lorenzo, the one Michelangelo never clad in marble.
