The Mezquita and the Jewish Quarter
You start in front of two statues that everyone photographs without asking why both are of exiles.
Upper Córdoba in twelve stops: kings kept in chests, busts keeping an eye on the neighbours, a general who may have a bullfighter's face, the pavement of punishments, and Leonor López de Córdoba, the woman who dictated her life.

You start at San Hipólito, where two kings spent a century in wooden chests and where Leonor López de Córdoba got hold of some yards to build herself a home. At San Nicolás, two busts called Patience and Obedience. In the Plaza de las Tendillas, a general with a marble head and a clock that strikes the hours in seguiriyas. At the Plaza de la Compañía, secret spyholes and an expulsion at midnight. Then a Roman temple with brand-new columns, the pavement where unnamed bodies were laid out, and the friars of San Pablo walking out in 1513. You come back to Leonor beside the church that holds her chapel, and finish in the walled-up streets of 1804, with a fairy-tale duende.

A narrow lane, an open square, then shade again. Córdoba is a rewarding walk when heat, cobbles and the appeal of a seat can adjust your plans.

You start in front of two statues that everyone photographs without asking why both are of exiles.

You enter Corduba the way a traveller did: between two enormous tombs on the road to Hispalis, and through a gate that lasted two thousand years until it got in the way of the fair, a gate that still keeps the legend of a sham duel.

You start at the Malmuerta tower: it was said a knight built it as a penance after killing his wife, but its inscription tells a different story, and the money came from fines on gamblers.
