Venice

Venice was made through work as well as display. Merchants, trades and the Arsenal connect walks asking how the city made its living and who sustained that activity. The routes bring commercial and working places alongside human stories. Water remains central, but so do what it carried and the lives of those who depended on it.

In “From the Accademia to the Salute”: The shore of timber rafts and the boatbuilders' church let you look at the Zattere through work beside the water.

In “Castello and the Arsenal”: Castello lived off the sea, and off the people who arrived by it.

In “Rialto”: You start where the Polos lived, between the legend of the jewel banquet and what Marco's will actually says, and where today there's a theatre named after a singer, the daughter of a Spanish tenor.

Venice, before you go

In Venice, the shortest way depends on finding a bridge. Set off lightly loaded, in good shoes, with patience for the detours the water imposes.
