Venice received communities with different histories and positions within the city. This theme approaches Jewish, Greek, Dalmatian, German and Turkish lives through places in the catalogue. The walks ask what it meant to be both a resident and an outsider, which exchanges were possible and which boundaries shaped membership of a community.
In “Castello and the Arsenal”: The Venice of the sea: Greeks and Dalmatians with a church of their own, a runaway elephant that ended up in a church, Vivaldi's orphan musicians, the baby who wasn't expected to survive, the shipyard that amazed Dante, the Lepanto gate and a Greek lion with Viking runes.
In “The Venice Ghetto”: In 1516 a councillor proposed shutting the Jews of Venice into a place "like a castle".
In “Rialto”: You start where the Polos lived, between the legend of the jewel banquet and what Marco's will actually says, and where today there's a theatre named after a singer, the daughter of a Spanish tenor.
