Rome

Rome's communities and remembrance call for more than recognising monuments. These routes approach people who lived under restrictions, faced persecution or were left outside the city's more comfortable narratives. Places help you follow particular episodes and ask how they're remembered, keeping the people affected at the centre of the listening experience.

In “Monti and the Suburra”: Edgardo Mortara and the House of Catechumens approach the memory of conversion and its human consequences.

In “Rome's Ghetto and Tiber Island”: Rome's Jewish community in the neighbourhood where it was shut in: a fountain taken away from it, a house that spoke of "the forum of the Jews", five synagogues in a single building, 16 October 1943 and an invented disease in the island's hospital.

In “From the Quirinale to Via Veneto”: You start in front of the giants of the Quirinale and the palace from which a French general took a pope away at night, and in whose courtyard Italy's last king said goodbye, after a reign of little more than a month.

Rome, before you go

Rome calls for a water bottle, reliable shoes and room for a detour. Its squares link up on foot; the hills and sunshine decide how many you will enjoy in a day.
