From the Vicaria to Forcella
East of the historic centre, Naples judged its citizens and took in abandoned children. Follow those stories from the Vicaria to Forcella.
The great people's square of Naples, where the city rose up, put people to death and said goodbye to its own: the scaffold wedding that never happened, the fire of 1781, the last Hohenstaufen beheaded at sixteen, the executions of 1799, Masaniello's ten days against the viceroy's taxes and Naples' farewell to Totò.

You start under the clock arch of Sant'Eligio, with some little stone heads that legend gave names to and a historian took them back. The square you're standing in was born of a fire at a fireworks display. In one corner, the place where a sixteen-year-old king lost his head in front of the crowd, and a floor that, people said, never dried. This is where, in 1799, the journalist who asked for the nobles' axe died, and so did a duke's son of about twenty-four, whose family shut its great gate. And this is where it all began in July 1647: a fight over fruit, a twenty-seven-year-old fishmonger and ten days that put the viceroy on the ropes. You see where Masaniello was born and finish at the Carmine, where he was killed, where Spain turned the rebels' tower into a castle, where some bones lie that may be Corradino's, and where Naples said goodbye to Totò.
