Madrid

Neighbourhood Madrid is told through the trades and lives that gave its streets their uses. These walks look at people working, shopping and meeting in the everyday city. They approach differences and changes that can be missed on a visit centred only on the buildings of the court and their more familiar histories.

In “La Latina”: A capital nobody decreed, two playwrights on the same street, a church beneath a market, the dragon gate, a Mudéjar tower, the street that traces the old moat, the woman who gave the neighbourhood its name, the square of grain and the gallows, and a Virgin rescued from a pile of firewood.

In “The Rastro and Lavapiés”: From the soldier with a tin at the top of the Rastro to the 3,500 cigar-makers who rose up in 1830: tanners, a street with two heads, a Jewish quarter that arrived late, a hanged man's hat, a corrala, a roofless church and a neighbourhood that has always belonged to outsiders.

In “Malasaña and the Dos de Mayo, 1808”: The second of May 1808 wasn't the work of just two captains: it was the work of a neighbourhood.
