Budapest

Budapest's legends add tales to places already striking in their own right. This theme asks when those stories arose and which events lie behind them. The walks let you hear what the city tells while following the origins of its versions, with the difference between tradition and documentation explained along the way.

In “Pest and the Revolution of 1848”: The steps that never heard the poem let you distinguish popular memory from the actual locations of the revolution.

In “Buda Castle”: You finish at Ilonka's fountain, a legend with an author and a date.

In “Gellért Hill and the Tabán”: On the way down the slope come the witches of the trials, Bishop Gerard and the legend of his death, which isn't the one the guidebooks tell, and the hill as an Ottoman traveller saw it, with its bath of the green column.

Budapest, before you go

A view can seem close while lying across a bridge. Keep each walk within a sensible area and save some energy for simply stopping beside the Danube.
