Pest and the Revolution of 1848
A revolution survives among the cafés, printing shops and theatres of central Pest. Follow 15 March 1848 through the streets where it unfolded.
The Pest riverbank from bridge to bridge: the city's oldest parish church, once a mosque; the promenade shelled from the Castle; the ballroom that hosted a feast for Sisi's coronation; the day three cities became one; a general kidnapped at dawn, and the count who pledged a year's income for a bridge.

You start beside the church that was already here when Saint Gerard died, and which still keeps a niche facing Mecca. You walk along the Danube Promenade with the Castle opposite: it was shelled from up there in 1849, a grand banquet was held here for the coronation of 1867, and from here you can see the city that in 1873 stopped being three and became Budapest. One morning in 1944, the general who was meant to lead Hungary out of the war was kidnapped on this very promenade. You finish at the Chain Bridge, with the story of the count who waited for days in front of the frozen river, the lions that, legend has it, have no tongues, and the bridge that fell into the water and came back exactly a hundred years after it first opened.

A view can seem close while lying across a bridge. Keep each walk within a sensible area and save some energy for simply stopping beside the Danube.
