Berlin

These walks place Nazism, war and remembrance within Berlin's geography. The theme approaches places where power was exercised and the ways its consequences are remembered. The stories keep people at the centre and distinguish between contexts, so the city doesn't become merely a backdrop for dates and familiar historical labels.

In “The Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate”: You start in front of the Reichstag, where bronze letters cast from cannon waited twenty-two years, made by a Jewish family firm that the Nazi regime later robbed and decimated.

In “Berlin's Jewish Quarter”: You go on past the Aronsbachs' stones, the city's first Jewish cemetery, the missing house and Regina Jonas's plaque, and you finish beneath the golden dome of the New Synagogue, with its eternal light found among the rubble in 1989.

In “Bebelplatz and Gendarmenmarkt”: You finish among the mirrors of Berlin's Jewish fashion trade and in front of the building where, on 9 November 1989, a sheet of paper was read out live.

Berlin, before you go

Berlin alternates broad avenues, courtyards and neighbourhoods with lives of their own. Walk each area slowly and use transport between them: several good walks make more sense than one marathon.
