Gaudí and Modernisme can be explored through more than the shapes of a façade. This theme brings artists, clients and controversies together to approach the people who made that Barcelona. The walks compare buildings and surroundings, ask who they were built for and connect them with the human stories placed around them in the catalogue.
In “La Rambla, from Canaletas”: Then come the street lamps the City Council commissioned from a very young Gaudí, the Güell family's palace, the theatre that paid for a hospital's beds, La Rambla's last surviving convent and the shipyards where the galley of Lepanto was built.
In “Outside the Sagrada Família”: By the pond, the field a bookseller bought for a church paid for only with alms; at the Nativity façade, the only tower Gaudí saw finished, the tortoises beneath the columns and the angels a stonemason from Japan remade after the war destroyed the models.
In “From the Palau to Ciutadella”: Inside the park: the bust of the painter who, people say, was the first woman to have a monument in Barcelona, the mammoth that was left on its own, and the cascade where a student called Gaudí once worked.

A city worth looking up for, with pavements worth watching too. Between narrow lanes, long avenues and a break by the sea, leave room in the day to sit down.
