The initials VOC and WIC raise questions about the origins of part of Amsterdam's wealth. This theme connects colonial trade, slavery and remembrance. City locations provide a way into the people and activities involved, without separating buildings and profits from the histories that made them possible or from the question of how they're remembered.

In “From Leidseplein to Museumplein”: A theatre that came to this square running from fire, with a front that still keeps rich and poor apart.

In “The Jordaan”: You finish in the Noordermarkt, the square where the neighbourhood rose three times, in front of the plaque to the evening of 24 February 1941, and beside a boy from a novel who takes you back to where you began.

In “The old harbour and the VOC”: From the harbour to the boardroom, follow the trade that transformed Amsterdam.

Amsterdam, before you go

Canals, bridges and narrow façades invite aimless walks. Enjoy them attentively: between the water, trams and bicycles, the best place to look is a clear patch of pavement.
