Amsterdam

Amsterdam's Jewish history can be followed by asking who arrived, how they lived and what remains of their places. These walks bring the Jodenbuurt and its people down to street level. They connect community life, change and remembrance, keeping people ahead of any simplified image of a neighbourhood and its past.

In “The Jewish Quarter”: Under the city hall and opera house there was once an island for storing timber, where the Jewish Quarter began and where archaeologists found neighbours from half of Europe, and a market that in 1941 became a market for Jews only.

In “De Pijp”: Along the Ferdinand Bolstraat you head into streets put up on borrowed money and in a rush, where houses collapsed while they were still being built.

In “The Plantage under Occupation”: The Plantage was a green, well-to-do neighbourhood, with a zoo, a botanical garden and many Jewish residents.

Amsterdam, before you go

Canals, bridges and narrow façades invite aimless walks. Enjoy them attentively: between the water, trams and bicycles, the best place to look is a clear patch of pavement.
