Amsterdam

Amsterdam's reputation for tolerance invites a more precise question: which freedoms were offered, and to whom? These walks examine the possibilities and limits of living in the city. Their stories compare contexts and people, without treating tolerance as a label that can explain every episode of the past on its own.

In “The Jewish Quarter”: Spinoza and the expulsion without an Esnoga bring the theme of freedoms to the boundaries of belonging to a community.

In “The old harbour and the VOC”: The church people were allowed to see and the motorway that never arrived invite questions about who decided how the city could be lived in and displayed.

In “Red-Light District and harbour”: The church hidden in an attic and the Zeedijk's stories let you consider which freedoms were visible and which needed shelter.

Amsterdam, before you go

Canals, bridges and narrow façades invite aimless walks. Enjoy them attentively: between the water, trams and bicycles, the best place to look is a clear patch of pavement.
