Vienna's legends accompany buildings and corners that can look different once you know the tale. This theme asks when each story appeared and how it relates to events. The walks keep the enjoyment of hearing a mystery while making a clear distinction between documented history and the traditions the city has maintained.
In “From Judenplatz to Café Central”: The pagan who fires and the stories of sanctuary at the Freyung bring legend into the squares of Vienna's old centre.
In “Legends of Old Vienna”: Vienna's legends told for what they are, with the date someone first wrote them down: the basilisk in the well, dear Augustin and the plague pit, the church "of the year 740", the man wrongly credited with coffee, the Toothache Christ and the Devil's nail-studded trunk.
In “The Prater”: You walk up Praterstraße to the flat where Johann Strauss the younger wrote The Blue Danube, which had its premiere in an empty swimming pool, without him and without much success.

The big squares can make you feel you ought to hurry. Vienna rewards looking at façades and allowing a proper pause; combine its compact old centre with transport when changing areas.
