Toledo

Toledo's communities call for a look at encounters as well as exclusion. Jewish, Muslim and Christian histories appear here through particular places, decisions and conflicts. These walks avoid reducing coexistence to a picturesque slogan: exchanges matter, but so do conversion, social boundaries and the changes that affected different groups living within the city.

In “Mosques, Mozarabs and Mudejars”: In the centre: a judge for each community, the Mozarabs who wrote in Arabic and kept their own rite, the Tornerías mosque that stayed open until 1502, the broken promise over the great mosque, and some shops given to a Muslim woman that ended in a lawsuit when the cloister was built.

In “Power in Toledo”: Then two brothers on opposite sides, a tribunal that kept moving house and, at the end, the council of 589 at which a queen signed: Church and Crown sharing the city from the very beginning.

In “The Jewish Quarter and the Conversos”: From the Jewish quarter to the Sentencia of 1449: a house auctioned in 1397, a castle that ended up as a rubbish tip, ropes across the weirs, a fallen treasurer, Hebrew letters that were never erased, and the first law to shut people out by blood.

Toledo, before you go

Toledo fits into a walk, though rarely a straight line. Good soles and a plan by area do more for the trip than an endless list of monuments.
