Santiago de Compostela

Compostela's women had a place in the city of the Camino, the archbishop and the university. This theme follows their stories through routes connecting them with particular locations. The walks recognise their lives and their memory within the wider city, giving them more time than the brief attention a commemorative plaque usually receives.

In “Women of Compostela”: Behind the walls of Compostela lived women with names: abbesses who barricaded themselves against reform, nuns who fled by night, orphan girls, the university's first woman graduate and the founders of Belvís.

In “The Alameda”: At the entrance to the Alameda, two women in painted bronze are waiting for you: theirs is the story of a family persecuted from 1936 onwards, and of a city that ended up making them a symbol.

In “Witches and spirits”: Beyond the Porta do Camiño, a stone cross with a saint's name, a farrier who cried out to the Virgin on his way to the gallows and, at Bonaval, two homecomings that really happened: Rosalía in 1891 and Castelao in 1984.

Santiago de Compostela, before you go

Granite, arcades and squares where someone has always just arrived. Santiago invites a slower walk, with a layer handy and time to wait for a shower to pass.
