Porto

Each transformation of Porto left a new city and something that was no longer there. This theme follows those decisions through walks concerned with projects, demolition and changes of use. It asks what modernisation brought and which memories still explain a place, even when its present appearance tells only part of the story.

In “From the Sé to Ribeira”: The esplanade of 1940 and the palace built over a burned convent reveal changes of scale and use between the Sé and Ribeira.

In “The Baixa”: Porto didn't stay inside its walls: every century it cut itself a new street, and almost always something had to disappear.

In “The Palácio de Cristal”: You start at a bust of Wellington and soon see why: in 1809 the two enemy marshals stayed in the palace opposite, and the story goes that one of them ate the other's dinner.

Porto, before you go

Tiled façades, steps and pauses with the Douro in view: Porto is made for measured walks. Group nearby places together; the map draws much easier lines than your legs will find.
