Krakow's Main Market Square
The Main Market Square looks like a postcard, but every corner holds a better story than the postcard.
From Szeroka Street, the heart of the Jewish town, to Ghetto Heroes Square, crossing the Vistula as in March 1941: what Kazimierz was, what the film shot here and what happened on the other side, a carpenter's song, the empty chairs and the pharmacist who stayed.

Begin beside the cemetery rebuilt with broken gravestones, on Szeroka Street, where Jewish life in Krakow revolved for centuries and where a festival brings it back every summer. From the Old Synagogue you cross the bridge to Podgórze, where more than sixteen thousand people were shut in in 1941. On the bridge, Schindler off the screen: the factory founded by three Jewish partners, and the list. On the other side, the carpenter who couldn't write music and whose song the ghetto's young people sang, the chairs in the square, the Eagle Pharmacy and the wall where a plaque says their last journey began here. Includes a content warning. Schindler's factory lies outside the walk (about 600 m away, with no story in between): an optional extension.

The centre tempts you to keep walking from square to square. Mix stone streets with parks and a warm meal, leaving time to listen in neighbourhoods that deserve a quieter pace.

The Main Market Square looks like a postcard, but every corner holds a better story than the postcard.

Kazimierz was a town in its own right, with its own market square and town hall, and inside it, from the end of the fifteenth century, a Jewish town with its own wall and gates.

You walk down from the square along Grodzka and Kanonicza, the Canons' Street, looking at the windows, past a stone lion that's been looking out over the street for centuries and a house the town council itself ended up buying.
